There has been a debate over cutting down a real tree for Christmas for many years. Teddy Roosevelt declared, in 1901, “It’s not good to cut down trees for mere decoration.” We definitely don't condone going into the bush and cutting down a tree unless you re-plant a tree in it's place.
In 1901, I'd expect a lot more people went into the bush to cut a Christmas tree--tree farmers just weren't around. Christmas tree farmers, like Copeman Tree Farms, is actually beneficial to the environment because we produce and sustain over 200 acres of trees! In fact, the number of trees on our farm supplies oxygen for over 600,000 people every day, year round.
Copeman Tree Farms specifically plants and nurtures Christmas trees--we do not cut down one forest and then move to the next, leaving empty fields behind us. For each Christmas tree cut, one to two seedlings are re-planted in it's place.
Interesting Fact: If you purchase an artificial tree, it comes in a box. That box was made from a real tree, and that real tree was likely not re-planted. So, in reality, purchasing a real Christmas tree from a tree farmer is better for the environment that an artificial
